Healthcare Student Scrub Starter List: What You Need Before Clinicals

The short version: Before you buy anything, find out what your program requires. Then build a small starter set: two or three scrub sets that meet those rules, plus the few tools and comfort items that make long clinical days easier. Order early enough to wash, fit, and fix problems before your first shift.

Start with your program's uniform policy

Your school decides the basics, so read the policy first. Ask your program coordinator or check your student handbook for these:Open binder with blank pages and tabs beside a folded navy scrub top

  1. Required scrub color or colors, and whether different courses use different ones
  2. Whether a school logo or name patch is required, and who supplies it
  3. Rules on undershirts, jackets, footwear, and name badges
  4. Any limits on jewelry, hair, or accessories at clinical sites

If the policy is unclear, ask before ordering. A set in the wrong shade is the most common reason students have to buy twice.

Build a starter set, not a full wardrobe

Most students do well with two or three complete sets. That is enough to rotate through a clinical week and keep up with laundry. You can add more once you know how your schedule and your body handle the work.

  1. Tops and bottoms in the required color. Buy matching sets so you are not hunting for a close shade later.
  2. A fit you can move in. Squat, reach, and sit before you commit. Waistbands and seams should not pull.
  3. Pockets you will actually use. Count them and check the depth. Most students carry a pen, notes, and a few small tools.
  4. Fabric that holds up to frequent washing. Check the care label and plan for wash-and-wear convenience.

Add the small items that save your shift

A few practical extras make a long day easier. Check your program's list first, since some courses supply or require specific items.Penlight, bandage scissors, pen, notebook and watch beside a folded teal scrub top

  1. A watch with a second hand, if your program asks for one
  2. A penlight, bandage scissors, and a pen you do not mind losing
  3. A small notebook that fits in a pocket
  4. Comfortable, closed, wipeable shoes that meet your site's rules
  5. A stethoscope, if your course requires one
  6. A name badge holder or lanyard that meets your program's rules

Check sizing before you order

Sizing varies from one style to another. If you can, try on the exact style at a fitting day or from a sizing kit. If you order online, compare the size chart for that style, not a size from a different brand. Check how exchanges work before you buy so a wrong size does not delay your start.Stack of folded coral and navy scrub tops with blank tags and a measuring tape

Time your order around your start date

Work backward from your first clinical day. Leave time to receive your order, wash it once, check the fit, and exchange anything that is wrong. Ordering a few weeks early beats rushing the week before.

A quick note for program coordinators

If you help a whole cohort get ready, consider sharing the uniform requirements and sizing process in writing before students start shopping. It prevents most mix-ups. Bobcat Medical works with programs on cohort orders, with one color and style across the class, sized per student. Students and staff can also order individually online in the colors you choose.
